Money Saving Picnic Hacks

 Published on June 1, 2015

Now that it’s June, a picnic is a great inexpensive family-friendly weekend activity. Here are simple ways to save on your next family picnic:

DIY Picnic Blanket

Get a tarp or $1 shower curtain from the dollar store then cover it with a blanket. This will save you and your blanket from getting wet and dirty.

Plastic Cutlery, Plates and Glasses

It saves on clean up and you won’t have to worry about it breaking.

DIY Cooler

Line re-usable grocery bags with a garbage bag and fill the bottom with ice. Put the food that needs to be the coldest on the bottom and tie the garbage bag shut when full. Make sure to secure the bag during the drive to your picnic to avoid a mess! When you’re all done your picnic just dump out the ice/water and use the garbage bag for clean-up.

Lower Cost Picnic Foods

  • Potato salad
  • Baked beans
  • Corn on the cob
  • Slice up in season fruits
  • Jello

Fun/ Low Cost Activity

Build a kite and fly it in the park. There are many affordable and easy kite building kits available online.
